Chorus Levels
Winston-Salem Choral Academy offers different level chorus programs to meet the needs of our children and youth. Our chorus program offers choirs for girls ages 2nd - 12th grades and boys in grades 1 - 6 with unchanged voices.
Dragonflies

The Dragonfly Choir is a non-auditioned group of young singers. Membership is available to boys in 1st and 2nd grades who love to sing! Dragonflies will introduce beginning singing habits through group vocal instruction. Dragonfly Choir is also a prelude to membership in the Winston-Salem Choral Academy choir program.
Sforzando!

Sforzando is a group of auditioned boy treble singers from the 3rd - 6th grades. Membership is available to boys in the 3rd - 6th grades who love to sing and are interested in a higher-level musical experience. An audition and interview is required. Singers must match pitch and have good listening skills.
*This choir is for boys whose voices have not yet changed or are going though the “vocal maturation process."

Fireflies Choir

- The Firefly Choir is a non-auditioned group of young singers in Kindergarten and 1st grades.
Firefly Choir is also a prelude to membership in the Winston-Salem Choral Academy.
♫ Each semester runs for 7 - 8 weeks with a culminating concert and activity.
♫ Classes are held at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem on Thursday afternoons, from 5:30 – 6:10.
UPBEAT! - Training Choir

The purpose of the training choir is to introduce young singers to choral music through vocal discovery, music-reading activities, and light performance opportunities.
UPBEAT! is a non-auditioned group of girl singers. Membership is available to girls in the 2nd, 3rd, & *4th grades, interested in learning how to sing in a focused, educational setting. They will have the opportunity to bond as a Community of Singers through classroom and social experiences, as well as outside performing experiences.
*4th grade singers with previous musical instruction and singing experience may be eligible to audition for the Winston-Salem Girls Chorus LYRICA Choir.
UPBEAT! will introduce choral & general music through classroom activities. Activities include: Singing, basic music-reading skills, games, movement, and rhythm instruments. Music from all styles and periods are used, including Classical, folk, gospel, spirituals, and patriotic, as well as music of different cultures and languages.
UPBEAT! is also a prelude to membership in the auditioned Winston-Salem Choral Academy.

LYRICA Intermediate Choir

LYRICA is group of auditioned girl singers from grades 4-8. Membership is available to girls in the 4th-*8th grades who love to sing, and are interested in a higher-level musical experience. An audition and interview is required. Singers must match pitch and have good listening skills. LYRICA provides group vocal instruction, basic musicianship,and uses music from all styles and periods that form the foundation for musical learning and serves as the basis for the curriculum.
Musical concepts—melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, style, and performance practice—that are taught in the rehearsals. Included are musical skills, such as singing, theory, sight reading (including solfege), etc. These concepts and skills are taught through a singing-based curriculum, listening, and analysis.
*7th grade singers who have participated for 3+ years in our younger choirs, and 8th grade singers with previous musical instruction and singing experience, may be eligible to audition for ENCORE, our advanced choir. ENCORE is for singers through 12th grade.
Performances and sharing our music are a big part of the LYRICA Choir experience. LYRICA performs throughout the Winston-Salem area approximately every 4-6 weeks, and more often during the Christmas Season. Past performances include the Winston-Salem Symphony, Duke Chapel, Reynolda House, and local retirement communities. Sometimes we combine our performances with other choirs. A state-wide festival is included every March when we travel to either Charlotte, Greensboro, or Raleigh, for a Friday night/Saturday event.
* LYRICA singers are eligible to participate in Chorus Tours as scheduled. These are option with optional fundraising opportunities to assist in off-setting costs.

ENCORE - Advanced Choir

Geared for older and more experienced singers/musicians, ENCORE Advanced Choir is open to 8th - 12th grade girls. ENCORE takes the choir experience to another level, providing leadership and mentoring to the younger groups, as well as providing additional higher-level musical experiences for the singers. More responsibility is given to each member, both musically and within chorus.
Note: 8th grade singers with no prior experience may be required to sing in LYRICA for one season before moving up into ENCORE.
